Kenmore 35 Pint Dehumidifier Review

The Kenmore 35 Pint Dehumidifier is the smallest capacity unit in the Kenmore Dehumidifier range. This unit is also Energy Star® certified.

Its appearance is much as the same as the two larger Kenmore Dehumidifiers but its overall size and weight are less.

This is a dehumidifier for smaller areas and we always point out the advantages of a larger unit where a smaller dehumidifier is "just large enough". In a smaller area, well within the capacity of a 35 pint dehumidifier, this unit is to be preferred.

A larger unit will be bigger, heavier and noisier and the energy savings would not be likely to offset the additional purchase cost.

Of course, if a 35 pint dehumidifier is only just enough for the area in question our advice would be to go for a larger unit.

Features

The Kenmore 35 pint dehumidifier is a lower capacity unit designed to control relative humidity in smaller areas of the home. The principal advantage of this dehumidifier, compared with the other two units in the Kenmore dehumidifier range, is its smaller size. The 35 pint model is a compact dehumidifier and its dimensions are just 13.0(w) x 9.25(d) x 20.75(h) inches. The modest dimensions of this dehumidifier make it very suitable for use in an area with limited floor space and it may be particularly attractive to anyone living in a small apartment.

In appearance the Kenmore 35 pint dehumidifier is just as stylish as the larger models and to all intents and purposes identical, although on a smaller scale. Smaller size also means lower weight and at 29.8lb this dehumidifier is not uncomfortably heavy to move using the fitted carrying handles or caster wheels, a genuinely portable dehumidifier.

The water collected can be disposed of in one of two ways. Like all room dehumidifiers the Kenmore 35 pint dehumidifier has a water collection container, a bucket, into which the water drips from the cold coil. The bucket has a limited capacity and must be emptied, typically once or twice per day. The bucket cannot over-flow as the dehumidifier has an automatic shut-off system which operates when the bucket is full. Comments from purchasers of this dehumidifier echo complaints about the difficulty of removing and replacing the bucket made about the larger units in the range.

Alternatively a user can take advantage of the continuous drainage facility provided by this dehumidifier. A small bore plastic hose (not supplied) may be attached to the Kenmore 35 pint dehumidifier via a port in the unit. Provided that the hose runs "downhill" to a nearby drain or other outlet the water will be discharged as it is collected. Raising the dehumidifier a few feet above floor level will be helpful if this option is chosen. In contrast to complaints about the bucket, users are favourably impressed by the ease with which continuous drainage can be set up.

If you are in any doubt about the capacity of a 35 pint unit to control relative humidity in the area for which you are seeking a dehumidifier we suggest that you choose a higher capacity model. Although a larger unit will cost more to run per hour its energy efficiency (litres removed per kilowatt hour) will be higher and the number of hours per day for which it operates will be less.

Customers report high levels of satisfaction with the effectiveness of the Kenmore 35 pint dehumidifier in controlling relative humidity.

We recommend that a level of relative humidity of around 45% to 50% be maintained. This level will assure your comfort, control condensation, eliminate mold growth and deter dust mites. An adjustable humidistat is incorporated in the unit to allow you to set your preferred level. The chosen level is displayed on the digital read-out but customers have commented that the ambient humidity level is not shown. If you wish to monitor ambient relative humidity a separate hygrometer will be required.

Like most room dehumidifiers the Kenmore 35 pint dehumidifier has an auto-defrost system. This detects the build up of ice on the cold coil and shuts down the compressor to allow the ice to melt. This feature is incorporated to protect the dehumidifier from damage and does not mean that the unit will be suitable for use in areas with a consistently low temperature. If you live in an area which is cold for all or part of the year this type of dehumidifier would be a less effective choice for a garage or an unheated basement.

This is not an exceptionally quiet machine and many customers have complained about the noise it produces. We have been unable to source a reliable measure of noise output so cannot compare this dehumidifier with other brands of similar power. Complaints concern not only the volume of the noise but its pitch and this is clearly an issue for a significant number of users.

Equally common are the favourable comments given about the electronic controls and their ease of use.
