GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier Review
GE ADER65LP

The GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is the successor to the highly regarded GE ADER65LN, one of the best dehumidifier models on the market.

From a user's point of view the two models are virtually identical and this unit will undoubtedly uphold its predecessor's reputation as one of the best home dehumidifiers money can buy. Like the ADER65LN this unit is Energy Star® qualified.

Because of its very recent arrival in stores there are very few dehumidifier reviews by consumers of the latest GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier to confirm its qualities. Nevertheless, because GE has stuck with a winning formula we have no hesitation in recommending the GE ADER65LP 65 Pint Dehumidifier with as much enthusiasm and confidence as we did the ADER65LN.

At the time of writing (May 2011) both the ADER65LN and the ADER65LP remain on sale. Our dehumidifier review of the ADER65LN applies equally to the ADER65LP and it will come as no surprise to anyone that this review is very similar in both tone and content.

Overview

The GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is an attractive and stylish portable home dehumidifier with electronic controls, accessed via a soft touch panel, for ease of use, and an auto-defrost system to protect the dehumidifier from damage when operating in the low temperature ranges, below 65°F. The water collection container is mounted in the lower front of the dehumidifier. The GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is also equipped with a port for continuous drainage, if required, to a floor level drain or other outlet.

An auto shut-off control fitted to the GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) switches off the unit when the bucket is full and the user is alerted that the bucket should be emptied by an indicator lamp on the control panel. The dried air is vented from an outlet in the top-rear of the casing and the ozone friendly refrigerant R-410A is used in this dehumidifier to protect the environment. A washable air filter is included and is easily removable to allow regular cleaning. The unit is equipped with a carrying handle and caster wheels for ease of movement and has a six foot power cable.

Features

The GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is portable. Caster wheels and a top mounted handle for carrying the appliance are fitted to make movement easier, both on level floors and to higher or lower storeys of the home. The unit weighs 44lbs so is not a feather-weight, although this weight is typical of other dehumidifiers in the 65-75 pint class. The dehumidifier is relatively slim from front to back which is an advantage when carrying this unit. If side handles were added this would make carrying the dehumidifier a little easier for some folks for whom lifting may be difficult.

The GE ADER65LP has an adjustable humidistat with which your preferred level of relative humidity may be programmed. RH may be set to any level, from 35% to 80%, in 5% increments. For protection from mold and dust mites a level of 45% to 50% should be sufficient. The humidistat cycles the dehumidifier on and off to maintain the programmed level and, by avoiding unnecessary operation, helps to reduce costly energy consumption. It also prevents the air becoming too dry which can be uncomfortable for occupants of the home and damaging to its contents.

The GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) incorporates an auto-defrost feature. It is quite normal for ice to form on the cold coils of a dehumidifier at temperatures as high as 70°F and, if the ice is allowed to remain, the appliance becomes less effective and may easily be damaged. Auto-defrost detects ice formation and suspends the refrigeration process by switching off the compressor. The fan continues to run and the flow of air from the room melts the ice. This system allows the dehumidifier to operate without the risk of damage at temperatures as low as 41°F.

Although the GE ADER65LP can operate safely in colder conditions it is not a low temperature dehumidifier. The cooler the ambient temperature the more frequently the unit has to defrost and the longer each defrosting cycle takes. This will make the unit only marginally effective in lower temperatures and will seriously degrade its energy efficiency.

For cool basements a purpose built basement dehumidifier will be more suitable and cheaper over its lifetime. In warmer conditions, however, this unit is ideal for a medium sized to large basement and users may expect excellent results with this dehumidifier when used for this purpose.

Another convenient feature of the GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is its capability for continuous drainage. The bucket will normally need to be emptied once or twice a day and this may be irritating and, in some cases, impossible. Although the dehumidifier has an auto shut-off feature to prevent water spillage when the bucket is full it also stops the dehumidifier from doing its job.

Continuous drainage allows you to run a hose to a convenient drain or sump to discharge the water. The drainage is fed by gravity alone so the outlet for the water must be close by the dehumidifier and at a level below the drainage port in the casing. It will help to raise the dehumidifier a couple of feet above floor level to assist the water flow.

If you should have a power outage the dehumidifier's auto-restart will switch it back on. Together with continuous drainage and the humidistat, auto-restart means you can leave the dehumidifier on "auto-pilot" most of the time. Please remember to clean the filter however, the one and only item of essential maintenance.

The air filter is washable and should be removed regularly for cleaning. A blocked air filter may damage the dehumidifier and will certainly reduce both its effectiveness and energy efficiency. Fortunately with the GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) you will not have to rely on your memory to do this as the dehumidifier incorporates a filter cleaning indicator to remind you when the job needs to be done.

There are three fan speed settings available on the GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) which gives you the option to choose between maximum dehumidifying power or minimum noise to suit your preferences during the day.

A simple timer is included with the dehumidifier so that you can set the appliance to switch off after two or four hours.

Consumer Reactions

Because the GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is so new to the market there are hardly any dehumidifier reviews by consumers from which a summary of consumer reactions would be compiled. The 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is, however, so similar to its predecessor that consumer reactions are very likely to be as positive and enthusiastic as they have been for the ADER65LN.

The GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP)
Our Recommendation

In our judgement the GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) is a first class dehumidifier that should be every bit as effective and easy to use as its very similar predecessor. It is as competitively priced and we consider it to represent good value for money.

We are pleased to recommend the GE 65 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER65LP) to our visitors without reservation.
