GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier Review
GE ADER30LP

The GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) replaces the popular GE ADER30LN. The new model is pretty much identical to the ADER30LN which is highly regarded as an effective and reliable home dehumidifier and we have no reason to believe that the new 30 Pint GE ADER30LP will be any less effective, reliable and popular than its predecessor.

At present there are relatively few dehumidifier reviews by consumers for the GE ADER30LP and if problems with this model come to light we will, of course, revise our comments. On the basis of current knowledge however we believe that the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) is one of the best dehumidifier models for smaller areas of your home and are pleased to recommend it to our visitors.

Overview

GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER30LP)

The GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) is an Energy Star® compliant lower capacity dehumidifier suitable for use in smaller areas of your home where the temperature is typically maintained at 65°F or above. This dehumidifier will be entirely effective in a basement provided that the area of the basement is within the capacity of a lower powered dehumidifier. Running a dehumidifier of insufficient capacity in a larger basement will produce poor results and is wasteful of energy.

Basements are usually the coolest places in your home and if your basement temperature is often below 65°F you may find that a home dehumidifier such as the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) will not be fully effective, will run continuously and that your energy bills may be higher than you anticipated. In these circumstances you might consider heating your basement or using a purpose built basement dehumidifier designed for effective operation at cooler temperatures.

The GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) is an attractive dehumidifier with a clean and modern appearance. It is operated using simple electronic controls and can be monitored from the LCD display on the control panel. It is a compact dehumidifier, ideal for areas where space is restricted and can operate safely in cool temperatures although it is not fully effective at lower temperatures.

The water extracted from the air drips into a collection container with a capacity of 9.5 pints which may need to be emptied once or twice per day. Alternatively you may choose to take advantage of the continuous drainage feature of the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier which allows the water to run to a nearby floor drain through a short length of hose. If you are using the water collection container you will be pleased to know that the dehumidifier stops automatically when the bucket is full and an indicator light shows on the control panel to prompt you to empty it.

The GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier is a portable unit and can be moved using the carrying handle or rolled across smooth floors on its caster wheels. The dehumidified air is vented through the upper rear section of the casing and a washable air filter protects the unit from air borne particles. The GE ADER30LP uses the ozone friendly refrigerant R-410A.

Features

Managing the level of relative humidity in your home is easy using the adjustable humidistat featured on the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier. Using the electronic controls you simply choose a level of relative humidity and program that level into the unit. Once programmed the dehumidifier will operate until the chosen level is achieved and then cycle on and off to maintain that level without any more action by you. This feature ensures that you and your family are comfortable, that your home is protected and that you use no more energy than you need.

You can choose any level of relative humidity you like, within a range from 35% to 80%. What level should you set? We suggest a relative humidity of between 45% and 50%. At that level you will feel comfortable and you will have no worries about mold or mildew appearing. This level will also make your home uncomfortably dry for dust mites and although you can never be entirely rid of these unwelcome visitors you will keep their numbers within tolerable limits.

The only exception to this guideline would be those folks living in areas where winter temperatures drop well below freezing point. When it's that cold outside you may need to lower relative humidity in your home to as low as 30% to avoid condensation forming. For most people the 45-50% guide will be fine, and less costly to maintain.

The GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (ADER30LP) is a compact dehumidifier with external dimensions of just 10.25 x 19.5 x 13.38 inches. At 34lbs it is also relatively light and with a carrying handle and caster wheels it should not be difficult for most people to move about as required.

The compact dimensions inevitably limit the size of the water collection container and some may find its capacity of just 9.5 pints inadequate. In humid conditions it will need to be emptied a couple of times daily and in drier air at least once a day. If this is an unwelcome task then you will probably want to take advantage of the continuous drainage option provided by the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier.

All that you need to do is to attach a small hose to the outlet port in the dehumidifier casing and run the hose to a nearby drain or sump. The drainage works by the force of gravity so the drain must be close by and the hose should be angled towards the floor over all of its length. You may find it helpful to locate the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier a foot or two above floor level to improve the water flow.

If there is no convenient drain you may need to purchase a separate condensate pump. The pump will force the water over a greater distance or up to a drain on the floor above. Condensate pumps can be purchased for prices starting around $40. Please ensure that you choose one with a vertical lift ability of at least 12 feet.

A useful feature of the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP), not always found on portable home dehumidifiers, is auto-restart. If the power supply to your dehumidifier should be interrupted the unit will automatically restart when the power is resumed. This feature is particularly helpful if you are using the dehumidifier in a remote location and cannot attend it every day.

One feature of the GE ADER30LP which is often misunderstood (and occasionally misrepresented) is auto-defrost. As you know when the room temperature falls ice will form on the cold (evaporator) coils of the dehumidifier and this can happen at temperatures as high as 65°F. The ice cannot be allowed to remain as it degrades the dehumidifier's performance and will, ultimately, damage the appliance.

Auto-defrost sounds as though it is hi-tech but all it consists of is a sensor which detects the ice and a switch which stops the compressor. Once the ice has melted, aided by the flow of air from the fan, the switch restarts the compressor and dehumidification resumes. This allows the dehumidifier to operate without risk of damage in temperatures as low as 41°F.

Because the dehumidifier has this feature some people are misled into believing that it is a low temperature dehumidifier. In fact as the temperature falls the dehumidifier spends so much time defrosting that its effectiveness is vastly reduced in cool conditions it may run continuously but extract very little water. For this reason we do not recommend this unit, or any other portable home dehumidifier, for use in cool conditions, such as an unheated garage during cold winters.

All portable home dehumidifiers can be damaged by particles in the air and have a filter to remove the bulk of these particles before they can enter the appliance. In the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) the air filter is washable and can be removed easily for cleaning. Cleaning the filter is about the only item of regular maintenance you need to worry about, but it is essential.

If the filter is not cleaned at regular intervals the dehumidifier's performance will deteriorate, its working life will be shortened and, in extreme cases, it can overheat and even catch fire. To remind you when filter cleaning is due the GE ADER30LP has a filter cleaning indicator which is illuminated on the control panel when it is time for this chore.

There are three fan speed settings available on the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) which allow you the flexibility to choose between the most effective water removal or the lowest noise level to suit your needs and circumstances.

A simple timer is included with the dehumidifier so that you can set the appliance to switch off after two or four hours.

Consumer Reactions

As this is a new model there are very dehumidifier reviews of the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP) available at present. On the other hand this unit is virtually identical to its predecessor so it seems reasonable to assume that it will be as well regarded for its performance, build quality and reliability as the ADER30LN.

The GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP)
Our Recommendation

In our view the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP} is one of the outstanding home dehumidifiers in its class and ideal for smaller basements and other areas of your home. Please note that for larger basements you will need a larger dehumidifier and that if your basement is cool the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP), or any of the many other home dehumidifiers available, is not a good choice.

We are more than happy to recommend the GE 30 Pint Dehumidifier (GE ADER30LP), without reservation, to our visitors.
