Eco Air ECOD850E
Swimming Pool Dehumidifier Review

The Eco Air ECOD850E Swimming Pool Dehumidifier is a large capacity unit designed for humidity control of indoor swimming pools and suitable for other applications where a dehumidifier may be subject to splashing by water. The unit is IP44 rated which certifies that it is protected from ingress of solid objects, such as tools and small wires greater than 1mm, and against water spray from any direction.

The unit is suitable for small pools and spas and would also be effective in other applications such as food preparation areas, stores, archives, museums and libraries. The unit offers the advantages of a pleasing appearance, modest dimensions, relatively light weight and low noise output and may be wall mounted or floor mounted for maximum convenience. This dehumidifier will be particularly attractive to operators with well used public areas and/or busy work spaces.

Features

The Eco Air ECOD850E is purpose designed for indoor swimming pools and other applications where water sprays and splashes may make contact with a dehumidifier. It is therefore suitable for use in the pool area itself which is essential as this unit is not configured for ducted installation.

There are two installation options for this unit. It may be wall-mounted, using the brackets provided, or it may be floor-mounted, using the feet included with the dehumidifier. Wall-mounting will probably be the preferred option for most users as it makes more efficient use of floor space, reduces the risk of water coming into contact with the unit, facilitates drainage of the condensate and, at a suitable height, keeps the dehumidifier beyond the reach of curious fingers, particularly young ones.

If floor-mounting is the most suitable option we would recommend that that the dehumidifier is securely fastened to the wall to protect both the users of the area being dehumidified and the unit itself.

The Eco Air ECOD850E is rated for 45 litres of moisture extraction per day. The conditions under which this rating was obtained are 30°C and 70% relative humidity. These are not completely unrealistic conditions for a swimming pool, spa or some food preparation areas although this level of moisture removal would not be approached in some of the other applications, such as libraries, where both relative humidity and, particularly, temperature are likely to be considerably lower.

The condensate is disposed of by means of continuous drainage, employing a gravity feed. The use of a gravity feed argues for wall mounting to improve draining efficiency.

Where a suitable floor level drain is not immediately available a condensate pump will be required to provide vertical lift or to carry the condensate horizontally to a more remote outlet. The absence of an integral condensate pump may be considered a disadvantage of this dehumidifier in some applications although in the water related facilities for which it was specifically designed floor drains are likely to be readily available.

Humidity control is by means of an adjustable humidistat which will control operation of the unit to maintain the chosen level. The Eco Air ECOD850E provides 2 fan speeds which will be an advantage in areas where it may be necessary to select the lower speed to reduce the volume of noise from the unit at certain times. Reducing the fan speed will, of course, reduce the rate of water extraction and this will be a problem if the unit is only just large enough for the area in which it is sited.

The Eco Air ECOD850E is reasonably quiet for a unit of this size, at 56-58dB. In a swimming pool the noise is unlikely to be a problem although in a library some may find it intrusive.

Perhaps the most appealing feature of the ECOD850E is its relatively small size. The exterior dimensions are 660 x 750 x 345mm making this unit a compact dehumidifier for its power. Combined with the manageable weight of 39Kg the modest size of the unit makes it very suitable for wall mounting and two or more of these dehumidifiers may be preferred to a single, larger unit in some circumstances.

The ambient temperature operating range of the ECOD850E is 5°C to 35°C. In swimming pools and related applications the ambient temperature is likely to be ideal for a refrigerant dehumidifier, at least when the facility is in use. The unit may be expected to be less effective at the lower end of the range and this should be borne in mind when selecting a unit for other, unrelated uses.

For ease of use the ECOD850E incorporates soft touch, electronic controls and a digital display. There is no indication that a remote control option is available which may be inconvenient if the unit is wall-mounted and frequent adjustments are required.

The unit incorporates washable air filters and the recommended cleaning should be carried out at the prescribed intervals to ensure efficient functioning of the unit.
